Mental Health Support for Construction Crews is a 1-hour online training designed by occupational health psychology scientists and has been scientifically demonstrated to provide valuable training for construction crew leaders support mental health and wellbeing within the construction industry.
Technology Overview
Construction workers have some of the highest rates of depression, anxiety, psychological distress, addiction, overdose, and suicide of all occupational groups. The CPWR Center for Construction Research and Training reports that nearly half of all construction workers experience depression and that work-related factors are strongly associated with poor mental health in construction. Work-related factors contributing to poor mental health include employment instability and insecurity, job demands, lack of support, long work hours, hazardous work, poor psychosocial and safety climate, and bullying and harassmentⁱ.
Mental Health Support for Construction Crews responds to these well-documented issues. This training teaches mental health support skills to crew leaders (managers and supervisors) through engaging and interactive online activities. Leaders will learn to better recognize and support employees’ mental health through actionable lessons and leadership behaviors, with a goal of enhancing workforce retention and well-being.
Originally tested in a Military population, the Mental Health Support for Construction Crews training has been shown to significantly improve:
- Leaders’ knowledge of mental health and supportive leadership behaviors.
- Leaders’ perceived usefulness and favorability of the program.
- Employees’ sense of having emotional and instrumental support at work.
- Employees’ general feelings of belonging within their teams.
