What is a dental implant, and do I need one?

Dental implants may be an option for people who have lost a tooth or teeth due to tooth decay, gum disease or an injury. A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is placed into your jawbone to hold a replacement tooth or bridge. The ideal candidate for a dental implant is in good general and oral health, with healthy gum tissue and enough bone in their jaw to support the implant. Most of the time, the implant is placed in one appointment in a normal dental setting. Dental implants require the same care as your own teeth, so make sure to brush and floss your teeth like you would normally. You will also need to visit your dentist regularly to have your implant, teeth and gums examined to make sure they are healthy.
